The history of Fossati begins with Gérard Fossati and Pascal Emery, who met in 1974 at the oboe maker Rigoutat — Fossati as an experienced finisher, Emery as a budding key maker. In 1986, this gave rise to their own workshop, Fossati – L'Atelier de Hautbois, entirely in the spirit of artisanal, small-scale instrument making. In close collaboration with musicians such as Michel Bénet, the principal oboist of the Orchestre de Paris, the instruments were further developed and refined over the years.
To this day, Fossati makes its oboes and English horns at the workshop in Amilly, France. The firm enjoys a fine reputation for the tonal beauty and the precise mechanism of its instruments — and is especially valued for its outstandingly good student and intermediate instruments, which offer a high-quality, affordable entry into the world of the oboe.
In April 2026, Fossati – L'Atelier de Hautbois was acquired by the Eastman Music Company. Through this union, the workshop gains access to international resources and long-term investment, while production in Amilly and the artisanal character of the firm are intended to be preserved.
