Oboe purchase

What to look for when buying an oboe for beginners

Buying an oboe is not something you do every day – that's why providing you with advice is our top priority. As a specialist retailer for oboes, we understand the difficulties that beginners and advanced players face when buying an oboe.

The most important distinction when it comes to oboes is whether to purchase a semi-automatic or fully automatic instrument. The difference is not easy to explain, but basically it comes down to how the two upper octave keys are controlled.

As the French-influenced semi-automatic oboe has become more popular in Germany in recent years, fully automatic oboes are rarely offered, and in case of doubt, it makes more sense to take your first steps with a semi-automatic oboe.

The price of an oboe (student oboe) starts at around 1.100€ for inexpensive beginner oboes made of plastic and ranges up to around 4.400€ for a top-of-the-range student oboe made in France.

Oboe Shop offers a wide selection of used and new oboes and English horns for pupils, students and professionals. Our range extends from affordable beginner oboes to Tiery student oboes (known for holding their value), oboes from Cabart and Fossati, and professional oboes from Adler, Lorée, Marigaux and Mönnig.

We carefully select our instruments and only offer for sale those that we consider to be of good quality. We prefer to leave the untested resale of returned instruments to the large online retailers.

Purchase good, affordable oboes

Our new instruments come with a one-year manufacturer's warranty, and we are happy to repair your oboe even after the warranty has expired.

As the trend towards semi-automatic oboes continues, we no longer offer fully automatic oboes from stock.
