Gauge block

Gauge blocks are small ceramic plates used to check and calibrate measuring devices. Since all micrometers, even from their initial shipment, have measuring inaccuracies and their accuracy also changes over time, it is important to calibrate your micrometer from time to time.

To do this, insert the gauge block onto the micrometer. Ideally, the micrometer will now show "0" (only the millimetre dial will show a value higher than 1mm). Should your micrometer not point to "0" exactly, turn the rim and thus the dial of the micrometer until "0" is reached. After removing the gauge block, the micrometer will no longer show exactly "0". The deviation that can be seen now corresponds to the micrometer's measuring tolerance, and from now on your micrometer will measure accurately again.
